Ice skating on Lake Achensee

From the ice rink at the Atoll Achensee to the natural ice at the Buchau in Maurach

Julia & Madleine·4 min read

For a turn on the ice you have two options on Lake Achensee: the ice rink at the Atoll Achensee in Maurach or, when it gets really cold, the natural ice on the lake itself at the Buchau.

Ice rink at the Atoll Achensee

The rink is right next to the Atoll Achensee in Maurach, out in the open with a view of the mountains. You can rent skates on site (sizes 26 to 45, subject to availability); it is best to bring your own helmet. Besides skating there is also curling, and the snack bar and the Lagoon restaurant are right next door to warm up in.

Only in cold winters

Natural ice at the Buchau, Maurach

When Lake Achensee freezes over completely in the shallow Buchau at Maurach, in some winters you can skate directly on the lake — a very special, quiet way to skate, surrounded by nature.

At your own risk only!

The ice thickness is nowhere officially checked or cleared. Always judge the condition of the ice for yourself before stepping onto it — and if in doubt, stay off.
